W.D O'Connell Whiskey 5-Year-Old Single Malt Fino cask

W.D. O'Connell Whiskey Merchants just unveiled their latest creation: a Small Batch 5-Year-Old Single Malt Fino cask finish. This is a big deal for a few reasons.

First, it's a brilliant exploration of tradition and innovation. Founder Daithí O'Connell is clearly a history buff, drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of Spanish fortified wines. But he's not just mimicking the past. By using Fino casks, he's pushing the boundaries of what Irish whiskey can be.

Second, this release is all about single-source quality. We're talking three malt whiskeys, all from the same distillery, marrying their personalities within Fino butts sourced from a single sherry bodega, Fernando De Castilla. Now that's some serious attention to detail!

Here's the best part: exclusivity. This is a limited-edition release, with batches hitting shelves every 2-3 years. They only bottled 1,000 bottles for this first batch, so if you want to snag one, be prepared to move fast.

“The production of sherry wines boasts a long and storied history, characterised by its complexity and significant influence on the flavours we love in whiskey today. By using solera butts from Fernando De Castilla Bodegas in the Jerez region, we have crafted a whiskey that reimagines the possibilities of modern Irish whiskey. This release marries three malt distillates from one distillery with Fino butts from a single bodega.”
Daithí O'Connell, Founder

O'Connell says this expression is "bold and vibrant," and with non-chill filtration and a healthy 50% ABV, I have no doubt it packs a punch. Plus, the Fino cask influence promises something truly unique. Think toasted almonds, maybe a hint of citrus, and a touch of that signature Fino dryness.

The official release is slated for late May/early June 2024, available through W.D. O'Connell's online shop and select stores in Ireland, Northern Europe, and the US. The price tag? A cool €69.95.

So, are you intrigued? This 5-year-old single malt sounds like a true innovator in the Irish whiskey world. If you're looking to expand your palate and experience something special, keep your eyes peeled for this limited-edition release!
